Young Drivers in Farming - 13/02/2007

One of the principal drivers for M&S Transport a local farming transport company in Croes Goch near Llandeloy, is a 20 year old LGV Class 1 driver. Peter Phillips recently completed his Modern Apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles with Llanelli Rural Council Training. Peter’s 18-year-old brother Chris has also enrolled onto the same scheme that allows young people to drive heavy goods vehicles under the age of 21.

Peter Phillips recently completed his Modern Apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles with Llanelli Rural Council Training Peter completed the foundation part of his modern apprenticeship in record time, and was then moved swiftly on to the advanced stage where he upgraded his class 2 license to class 1. In addition to the apprenticeship framework, Peter was also able to gain the BTEC Level 3 in Road Freight Haulage giving him the advanced version of the qualification. His younger and very eager brother Chris is now hoping to emulate his successful brother and hopefully go a step further by completing the qualification even quicker.

“Peter was very keen to show what a great driver he was despite his age, and never failed to complete the work I had given him”, said Steve Sturgess who was the main transport assessor for Peter. Steve also added: “that given the enthusiasm coming from the younger brother, he does not see any reason why he cannot match or even beat Peter to the full award”. This is something that Peter would dispute according to their Programme Support Officer Steve Commander. Steve oversees and administers the progress of the qualification and ensures that the young drivers and their employers are kept updated with all the information they need to comply with the funding requirements of the Welsh Assembly Government who fund the cost of the scheme.

Company directors and Peter’s parents Steve and Audrey Phillips stated:

“that they had been very pleased with the way the Young Drivers Scheme had been run, and that it was an excellent opportunity for youngsters who are interested in the road haulage industry to gain their licences with added extensive training prior to the age of 21. The Tachograph and legal training along with the loading and sheeting knowledge are invaluable in this industry”.

The Young Drivers Scheme allows youth to participate in the haulage industry well before they would normally be able to. The scheme is sponsored by the Skills For Logistics organisation, which are the professional body that lay down the standards and requirements for the qualification.

Should anyone be interested in the scheme, they should contact either Jessica Jones or Steve Commander on 01554774121.
